THE NEED FOR SOLAR INVERTERS IN NIGERIAN HOSPITALS

Hospital Essentials

A report by the Federal Ministry of Health shows that Nigeria has 39,793 operational hospitals and clinics. Most of these facilities use diesel generators because of the poor power supply in the country.

Getting 24hrs light in Nigeria would be a miracle, except you are willing to pay extra money to get such a service.

According to BBC Pidgin and The Cable News, Magodo estate signed an agreement on August 15, 2019, giving residents of the estate a 24-hour supply. Under the agreement, they will have access to dedicated customer care and technical teams for prompt resolution of queries or issues within the estate.
The failing electric grid further burdens the health system, despite continuous huge investments in power.

Nigeria has suffered over 206 grid collapses in nine years, with as many as 12 in 2019. On the 12th of June 2022, the grid collapsed around 6.49 pm, leading to the shutdown of electricity feeders of some distribution companies.

The current diesel price slightly affected the price of health services and patients are complaining. Buying good diesel is really hard and the diesel being supplied by most distributors is called rice and beans because it is adulterated and therefore does not last long. Some suppliers tweak their meters to give the wrong measurements and usually destroy the generators.

Physician

Nigerians adapt to terrible conditions; a quintessential function of man- resilience. But should you also get accustomed to performing surgery under candlelight, for instance? Sounds like a hyperbole? It isn’t. In a shocking revelation, Dataphyte found that over 43 per cent of Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Nigeria have no power. And for those connected to the grid, the supply of electricity is often less than 5 hours per day. As a result, some PHCs resort to alternatives, unsafe substitutes like kerosene lamps and candles. (Dataphyte 2020)

No surgery should be carried out by candlelight, children should not be left vulnerable to disease because vaccines cannot be refrigerated. This situation could lead to the death of the patient or even complications.

Oolu, one of the fastest growing solar energy companies in Nigeria has a Solar inverter called Power Hub which is an avant-garde product with an enhanced lithium phosphate battery, which improves the efficiency of the battery, making the product more stable and robust with a longer lifetime.

Oolu Powerhub 1280

SPECIFICATION OF POWER HUB

  • Inverter capacity of 1000w.
  • 4hrs, 30mins by 200watts 8hrs, 30mins by 100watts on a full charge.
  • Solar Panel (Scalable to 700w), Solar charger.
  • Battery size 1280wh DC/AC output enabled
  • USB output charge unit

The Power Hub can be used for minor equipment in the hospitals like deliberators and sterilizers. The health sector needs solar energy because using solar power helps health facilities save money, which can be reinvested to support other priority health programs.  It will reduce the money spent on diesel and save lives.
